Somalia: Third Journalist Slain This Year

A Somali reporter was viciously stabbed to death in the Galkayo district of Puntland, a semi-autonomous region of Somalia, on 31 August, report the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Abdullahi Omar Gedi, 25, had just left work at Radio Daljir when attackers stabbed him repeatedly and left him unconscious. He died from his wounds on the way to the hospital. Gedi worked as a technician and also did some local reporting and on-air presentation. He is the third journalist to be killed this year.

"The Puntland authorities must catch the killers and the brains behind Gedi's killing and bring them to justice," said NUSOJ.

Puntland journalists are facing a serious deterioration in working conditions. Mohammed Yasin Isak, a correspondent for "Voice of America", was attacked by police and wounded in a shooting at a checkpoint in late 2009. Other critical voices have been assaulted and arrested in 2010. Some have fled the country.
