Mozambique: Companies shortlisted for third mobile license
The Mozambican telecommunications regulatory body, INCM,has accepted technical bids from three companies hoping to acquire the country’s third mobile phone licence. According to INCM general director, Americo Muchanga, 22 companies purchased the tender documents, but only six submitted bids.
Three of these were immediately ruled out because they came from the two existing mobile phone companies, M-Cel and Vodacom, and from M-Cel’s parent company, TDM. No company is allowed to hold two mobile telephony licences.
The companies whose bids were accepted are TMN SA, Movitel and Uni-Telecom CM. TMN is the mobile phone operation of the Portuguese telecommunications company, Portugal Telecom, while Movitel is Vietnam based, and Uni-Telecom is a joint venture between the Angolan company Unitel, and Mozambique’s Energia Capital, which is part of the Insitec group. After the final result is announced, the winning bidder has 12 months to begin its operations.
