Global Media: Kenya-Somali Radio Hits Station Air Waves in Mogadishu
A leading privately-owned Kenyan Somali-language radio station is now on air in Mogadishu.
A notice in English and Somali posted on the Facebook page of Star FM on August 14 2010 read: "Star FM has hit Mogadishu airwaves. We welcome our new listeners who can tune to Star FM at 97.0 [MHz]."
British Broadcasting Cooperation Monitoring (BBCM), confirmed that on August 14 the station was on air in the Somali capital on the above frequency. It was airing recitation of the Koran. The station was rebroadcasting the BBC Somali Service on its Nairobi frequency (105.9 MHz).
Some Kenyan radio stations are available along the Somali border, but BBC Monitoring has observed this is the first time these stations are on air in the war-torn Somali capital.
