Uganda: Journalists charged with publishing false stories

Three journalists attached to the Red Pepper Publications were last week charged with publication of false stories about the Kasubi fire.

Mr Ben Byabaraha, the publication’s news editor, Mr John Taremwa, a reporter and Mr Darlton Kaweesa, a sub editor were charged with sedition at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court.

The trio appeared before Chief Magistrate, Deo Ssejjemba and denied the case.

They were, however, released on non-cash bail of Shs5 million upon presenting seven sureties who were each bonded at Shs1.5 million each.

Prosecution led by Ms Irene Nakimbugwe alleges that on March 25 this year with intent to bring hatred, contempt and to excite disaffection against the government as per the law established, the journalists published false information in two different articles.

The stories under contention were titled; “Police quizzes Mengo Minister over Kasubi fires” and “Katikkiro Walusimbi grilled at CID for five hours” were allegedly published after the burning of the Kasubi tombs.

Ms Nakimbugwe, who did not object to the bail application, had asked court for stringent bail terms for the accused to make them report to court whenever they are needed.

The journalists were ordered to deposit their passports withcourt until the completion of the case.
