Uganda: Scribe held for covering court case
A Daily Monitor correspondent based in Bugiri was early this week arrested for allegedly covering a case at court.
Asuman Musobya, who was locked up in the office of the district’s junior intelligence officer, Mr Ben Tumugabirwe, spent about six hours in confinement, and was released without charge or recording a statement.
He was allegedly arrested on the orders of area district police commander Julius Owino.
Witnesses at the Bugiri Magistrates’ Court and other journalists who preferred anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Mr Owino ordered the arrest, saying journalists were interfering.
But the officer dismissed the allegations.
“I’m not aware of anything like that. I don’t remember seeing any journalist at the court,” Mr Owino said, when contacted on Monday.
The case in question involves a businesswoman, Zulaika Nakaziba who is accused of killing her husband, and later burying his body inside the house.
