
Zimbabwe: ZMC Holds First Meeting
The Zimbabwe Media Commission held its inaugural meeting on Thursday and promised to urgently implement programmes to develop the country's media landscape.
ZMC chairperson Mr Godfrey Majonga said: "The commission has resolved to expeditiously fulfil its mandate as outlined in the Global Political Agreement and subsequent constitutional amendments.
"The ZMC will do everything in its power to meet the expectations of the nation and stakeholders.
"It has resolved to move with speed to introduce and implement programmes aimed at promoting the development of Zimbabwe's media.
"The commission is now working on the framework for fulfilling its mandate and expects to have completed this in the shortest possible time."
Created by Constitution of Zimbabwe (Amendment) Act Number 19, te ZMC's mandate is to regulate the media industry.
It is also required to register media organisations and deal with any complaints the public might have against their operations. Mr Majonga is deputised by Ms Nqobile Nyathi while other members include lawyer Chris Mhike, diplomat Ambassador Chris Mutsvangwa and former Zimbabwe Union of Journalists president Mr Matthew Takaona.
Others are former ZBC chief executive officer Mr Henry Muradzikwa and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe division head Dr Millicent Mombesho
