Nigeria: Peace returns to Imo NUJ

Owerri — Peace has finally returned to Imo State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, following the unconditional acceptance of the peace moves by one of the principal actors and State Correspondent of Business Day, Mr. Christian Nwokocha.

Addressing journalists Tuesday evening at the NUJ Press Centre, Owerri, Nwokocha said that it was a case of if you can’t beat them, save the Union.

“This is a case of if you can’t beat them, save the union. I seek no refund, no deal and condition to back down. Henceforth, I recognise Chief Fidel Onyeneke as Chairman, Imo State Council of NUJ as a way forward for the Union in the state,” Nwokocha said.

He was particularly grateful to all his senior colleagues, “who contributed to the decision, which obviously would shape tomorrow.”

He said, “after a critical appraisal over the activities of NUJ and its future in the state, it becomes reasonable to state that it is better to back down and more honourable to withdraw from a fight capable of jeopardizing the interest of the people we promised to protect.”
