Nigeria: NUJ Tasks Jonathan, Onovo On Ex-AIT Reporter’s Killers
Abuja council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Tuesday tasked acting President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, to leave nothing to chance in ensuring that the killers of Efenji Efenji, an ex-reporter of the Africa Independent Television (AIT), are brought to justice.
The union expressed shock at the brutal murder of the ex-reporter by yet to be identified assailants in Karu, a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Valentine Day.
The union in a statement by its Chairman, Jacob Edi, said the Abuja council of the NUJ was particularly worried by the murder of the young and promising journalist.
Edi stressed that journalists are the conscience of society and “when they are hacked to death in such mindless and bloody manner, then there is little hope that society will become better.“
We are indeed pained by the gruesome manner of Efenji’s death and urge the polic to be thorough in its investigation and ensure that all those behind this wicked and despicable act are brought to justice”.
He added: “We are ready to partner with the police as always to resolve this unfortunate matter. It is the hope of every Abuja based journalists that this murder will not go the way of other unresolved killings in the country”.
The NUJ chief described the late journalist as an amiable and hardworking man who distinguished himself at the AIT with his incisive reports and commentaries.
While praying for the repose of the soul of deceased, Edi called on the family to take solace in the will of God, disclosing that the Abuja council of the NUJ would be holding a service of songs for the departed colleague after consultations with the family.
